Taylor Finally Departs, Successor Vows Peace
August 12, 03After making his final farewell speech on Sunday, Liberia’s President Taylor has left the country yesterday afternoon. His successor, Moses Blah, has vowed to bring peace to the war-torn and diamond rich country, offering to share the power with the rebels.
“I'm inviting the rebels to come and join me round this government," Blah told CNN last night. "I will appeal to them to lay down their arms and come back to Monrovia,” he added.
Blah is expected to remain in his seat until peace talks lead to a transitional government according to the cease-fire agreement signed in mid June.
