IDEX Poll: Most Won’t Consider Selling Synthetic Diamonds
July 21, 05If you thought that the diamond industry views synthetic diamonds as the enemy, sticking whole heartedly to the natural diamond only, you might be surprised by the results of IDEX Online’s latest poll. While most won’t or don’t think they’ll sell synthetic diamonds, still many do or are considering so positively.
But much to our surprise, 41 percent of respondents gave a positive answer: 35 percent saying they are “considering it positively” with another 6 percent saying they are in fact already selling synthetics.
Some might consider such an attitude ‘cannibalism’, harming the natural diamond trade by promoting or considering the promotion of a competing product.
Yet a different view is one of covering bases. Just like car dealers offer both American and Japanese cars, likewise diamond dealers, polishers and retailers want to ensure that when one product does not do well, another might compensate for the lost income.
