Sharp Rise in U.S. Polished Diamond Imports in October

The U.S. imported $1.527 billion worth of polished diamonds in October, that’s an increase of 18.69 percent compared to October 2005. In volume, imports decreased 1.72 percent to 1,670,963 carats, pushing average prices up 20.77 percent to $913.97 per carat (p/c).
During the first ten months of the year, the U.S. imported $13.902 billion worth of polished goods, a total of 13,594,316 carats – an average of $1,023 p/c. Compared to 2005, imports increased 8.92 percent in value, while decreasing 6.07 percent in volume. The average price increased 15.96 percent p/c.
During the January to October period, Israel supplied the U.S. with 52 percent of the goods by value, $7.168 billion, while India supplied the bulk of the goods by volume, 7,964,871 carats, or 59 percent of the total.
