Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair Marred by Multiple Thefts
June 29, 15(IDEX Online News) – As is something of a tradition, the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair was hit by an array of thefts. According to media reports, some 17 incidents took place over the four-day event with goods valued at HK$6.9 million ($890,052) being stolen.
The South China Morning Post reported that on the opening day of the show, 12 cases of theft of diamonds and other jewelry items were reported, with a total value of HK$5 million ($644,965)
Police have arrested three Hong Kong residents over the theft of a diamond valued at HK$830,000 ($107,064), which they managed to replace with a fake stone. The South China Morning Post reported that the switch was only noticed the following day.
