Two in Custody over Report Hacking; GIA Updates List to Include Client Accounts

(IDEX Online News) – The GIA has announced that two former employees of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are in custody in connection with the alteration of 1,042 of the lab’s grading reports.

The police informed GIA that the investigation has reached a point where it may now publish the client accounts that submitted the diamonds in question.

A list of the invalidated reports is now posted on the lab’s website. The list includes the number and issue date of the invalidated reports, the shape and weight of each diamond, and the submitting client account. However, it does not include color or clarity grades as those may have been altered.

The lab said that pending continued investigation by the Indian police, the listed client accounts have been suspended from further submissions to GIA.

Earlier this week, the lab said that an unauthorized outside source gained access to its grading information and doctored the reports before they were printed and sent to clients.

GIA said in a statement that most of the stones were submitted in India, although many were fully or part-graded at its headquarters in Carlsbad, California, and New York. It is believed that the stones were submitted between November 2014 and September 2015, with as many as 900 submitted in July and August alone

The lab requests that anyone in possession of any of these diamonds or grading reports return them immediately for examination.
