De Beers Canada Opens Calgary HQ
July 07, 16(IDEX Online News) – De Beers Canada announced that it is has moved its headquarters from Toronto to Calgary, to be closer to its mining operations, according to a report on cbc.ca.
De Beers considered several cities including Edmonton and Vancouver, but settled on the Calgary airport site for its corporate offices due its relative proximity to its Northwest Territory mines. The company also said that it was part of a cost-cutting exercise, aided by real estate discounts in the Alberta city due to the oil downturn.
De Beers employs around 1,000 people in Canada where it operates the Victor mine in Ontario and is building the Gahcho Kué mine with Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. The company was recently granted permission to flood the underground tunnels at its Snap Lake mine.
