Mother’s Day Shopping Drives Traffic to Jewelry Sites
June 19, 08Pre-Mother’s Day traffic to online gift and retail jewelry, luxury goods and accessories sites was up 9 percent month-over-month in May to 17.5 million visitors, according to measuring firm comScore. Other categories that showed gains in May include flowers, gifts and greetings; coupon and travel sites.
The flowers, gifts and greetings sites saw 42.4 million visitors, up 15 percent over April, making it the top-gaining category for the month. Mall sites were up 9 percent to 29 million visitors.
Coupon sites saw their traffic soar in May, as consumers searched for a way to reduce their costs. The category grew 11 percent to 24.5 million visitors. This section was led by sites such as Coupons, Inc, Eversave.com and CoolSavings.com.
"Mother's Day was a key driver of Web activity in May, as the convenience of online shopping for flowers and gifts drew many to retail sites," commented Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix.
"Summer travel was also on Americans' minds this month as warmer weather and the end of the school year spurred vacation planning. With Americans feeling the pocket pinch of soaring gas prices, rising food costs and an unsteady market, scouring the Internet for hot travel deals was essential for many to ensure an affordable summer vacation," he concluded.
